I read this quote years ago and it is one of many of Brennan's that I keep tucked away in a collection I have amassed for myself.
Brennan's point is well taken for all of us who call ourselves Christians. Am I living my life worthy of the calling? Am I doing anything that would call into question the holiness and purity and goodness of the gospel??
The thing Brennan doesn't point out, though, is that there is another reason people aren't believing in the Lord... it has less to do with Christians living lives less worthy of the calling and has more to do with the darkness in our own hearts.
Check out John 3:19-21 "This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."
